2013- Vicki McNamara

Crime Prevention Coordinator Stefanie Adams says:

What excited me when I first started working in the Crime Prevention Program six years ago was the notion that a good deal of our work would focus on empowering neighbors to improve the livability and safety of their neighborhood. As I see it, Neighborhood Watch embodies these ideals. We have seen that in strong Neighborhood Watches, neighbors get to know one another, become more invested in their community, and work with each other, crime prevention, police, and other agencies when problems arise. Because they know one another, residents are better able to identify when there is something problematic in the neighborhood and they get involved. Neighborhood Watch strengthens neighborhoods by bringing people together to create a shared vision of community safety.

I am proud to present this award to Vicki McNamara for excellence in Neighborhood Watch . Over the last few years, I have seen her work tirelessly to solve problems in her area. Where residents have been speeding in the neighborhood or impacting its livability, she talks to them directly to sort the issue out. In many cases, her diplomatic approach is enough to take care of the problem right then and there. When the problem is ongoing, she does not hesitate to contact me or other agencies to figure out what to do next.

Just a few of the many issues that she has addressed as leader:

  • Speeding
  • Road improvement projects
  • Vandalism at a nearby middle school
  • Door-to-door scams
  • Mailbox, bicycle, car theft
  • Police incidents in the neighborhood
  • Housing and other nuisances

Vicki is an excellent communicator. She disseminates information about the crime happening in the neighborhood so that neighbors are aware of what’s happening and what they can do. She works with me to make sure that she shares accurate information with the group and provides crime prevention information.

Last year, I had the pleasure to attend a National Night Out party on her street. It was rewarding to see that the neighborhood have become more connected and cohesive over time thanks to her efforts. Because of all of her hard work, Vicki McNamara is deserving of this award. She is a great example of how a strong Neighborhood Watch can positively impact the neighborhood and be good for the greater community.
