2010- Pastor Edgar Rodriguez

Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Wells says:

Pastor Edgar Rodriguez, his wife Denise and their three children (with twins on the way) moved from Iowa to North Portland in 2006.  Pastor Rodriguez lives directly North of his church,LifeFellowshipEvangelicalChurch, and upon moving toNorth Portlandinstantly became engaged with the community.

Shortly after moving into his neighborhood, Pastor Rodriguez began partnering with Crime Prevention staff to tackle a drug house on his street.  He quickly became a leader in preventing and addressing crime issues, not only his street, but also in the greaterNorth Portlandcommunity.  In the past several years Pastor Rodriguez has created new and exciting programs and ideas to promote public safety.

In 2008, Pastor Rodriguez’s church began a North PortlandGraffiti Clean Up event, which has turned into an annual event – the third clean up takes place on June 5th.  By partnering with the City’s Graffiti Abatement and Crime Prevention programs, Pastor Rodriguez and his church are a catalyst for addressing key livability issues and sparked the idea of the newly formed Livability Teams now working on a monthly basis in both the Kenton and Overlook neighborhoods.

Because of growing concerns from North Portland residents regarding safety and police services inNorth Portland, Pastor Rodriguez hosted one of the largest Public Safety Action Committee meetings to date with almost 200 residents and business owners attending.  At this meeting neighbors had the chance to speak directly with their police and elected officials about these concerns.  Currently, Pastor Rodriguez holds a key role on the North Portland Community Policing Committee and is working diligently with fellow residents and police officials to promote and increase community policing in all North Portlandneighborhoods.

While doing all of this, Pastor Rodriguez also rekindled his own street’s Neighborhood Watch program, and has tirelessly help promote the City’s new on-line crime reporting tool and encourages crime victims to report all crime and become part of the solution.

When not cleaning graffiti and fighting crime, Pastor Rodriguez partners with local schools on projects including handing out over 300 new winter coats to elementary students.  He also works closely with local businesses and neighborhood associations to promote neighborhood livability and safety.

Pastor Rodriguez’s enthusiasm is contagious, and his efforts have brought about tangible results.  The Crime Prevention Program is pleased to honor such a dedicated community leader, who truly cares about his community.
