The Penningtons, residents of the Hillsdale neighborhood, are so involved in public safety efforts that the Office of Neighborhood Involvement has named this annual award for them. They are active in the Hillsdale Neighborhood Assocation, representing it to the southwest neighborhood coalition public safety committee. They are on the neighborhood coalition's emergency preparedness committee. They are Neighborhood Emergency Team and Neighborhood Watch leaders. They are members of the citywide Neighborhood Watch Steering Committee. They are great promoters of National Night Out. Keturah has taught disaster preparedness workshops in Southwest. Phil created a website at www.explorepdx.org, covering public safety, physical fitness, science education, and much, much more. He has created websites for neighborhood associations, and videotaped crime prevention trainings and Neighborhood Watch promotion spots. They build walking trails and participate in litter patrols. On top of all of it, Phil and Keturah have cared for several elderly and vulnerable neighbors, making sure they get enough to eat, get to the doctor, and are not preyed on by scam artists. They truly deserve to have this award named after them for their amazing contributions to their street, their neighborhood, their coalition area, and their city.
