2010- Imani Thrower

Crime Prevention Coordinator Mary Tompkins says:

Imani Thrower is a senior at GrantHigh School, and is part of a Girls’ skill building group that focuses on making positive choices, engaging in law enforcement internships, getting involved in the community and advocating for themselves.  She provides positive peer support and is an academic role model.

Imani has emerged as a leader in the Girls’ Group – helping talk with the other young women in the group about making good choices, avoiding situations that could result in negative or criminal consequences, and engaging in community activities.

Imani is also part of the Upward Bound project through PSU, and has been an active participant for the past four years.  Last summer she had the privilege of traveling toNew Orleansfor a month long visit where she helped with rebuilding the City.

When Imani learned that Upward Bound wanted to connect with young women of color who may need their services, she arranged to have her advisor and mentor with the Upward Bound program attend and talk with the girls’ group.  Imani also provided the Girls’ Group with information and applications for the program.  This type of networking and bringing resources to not only the group but toGrantHigh School, demonstrates how Imani is aware of the resources around her that encourage prosocial activities and promotes the prevention of crime.

In addition, Imani was one of the candidates for Miss Black Oregon this year, demonstrating leadership, initiative, and positive role modeling for other African American young women.

Imani has accepted her position as a leader of the Girls’ Group and will be graduating from Grant, in June.

Imani, congratulation on your many successes and thank you for making a difference in the lives of your peers.
