“ABCs of Land Use” Workshop

This free workshop is designed for neighborhood activists, business association members and land use volunteers who are interested in learning: 

  • the basics of how the City of Portland develops land use policies and plans
  • how the development review process works for individual projects
  • how you and your neighborhood can take action and have a voice in these processes. 

Workshop participants will get hands-on experience with a land use review case, including review of a development proposal and site plan, identification of relevant issues, and effective ways to respond to the approval criteria.

Presenters include Nan Stark, Northeast District Liaison, City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability and Jason Richling, City Planner, Bureau of Development Services.

Claire Adamsick (NECN) and Paul Leistner (ONI) will describe the role of neighborhood activists and neighborhood associations in Portland’s land use and development processes. Nan Stark (BPS) will describe how land use planning policies and planning projects are developed. Jason Richling (BDS) will describe how the development review process works for individual projects and how community members can get involved in and have a voice in these processes.

Coffee, juice and pastries will be provided.

Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 30 people.

  • The Comprehensive Plan and      Zoning Code
  • How to access and read Zoning      Maps
  • What is a Land Use Review and      how it differs from a building permit
  • Comparison of the Land Review      Processes: Type I, II, IIX, and III
  • How to read and respond to a      Land Use Review Notice
  • The Appeal Process
