The Neighbors West/Northwest Coalition is an exceptional community organization made up of twelve neighborhood associations in northwest Portland. Neighbors West/Northwest continually supports public safety efforts and has a history of innovative public safety awareness activities. Neighbors West/Northwest regularly disseminates crime prevention information and news in their newsletters and at neighborhood meetings, and they routinely refer people with crime concerns to our program. Because of their dedication, the communities in Northwest, Downtown, Old Town, China Town and the Pearl, are constantly reminded of the crime prevention resources available to Portlanders.
Neighbors West/Northwest has gone above and beyond this year with their Coffee Klatch meeting series. The Coffee Klatch meetings were developed by Neighbors West/Northwest Community Resources Program Manager Angela Southwick as a way for Northwest and Downtown neighbors to engage with public safety employees and officials. The first Coffee Klatch was held on April 29th, 2014 with Commander Day and Sgt. Willie Halliburton of Central Precinct and ten area residents and business members. The intimate setting, convenient location, and small group discussion made attendees feel comfortable engaging with the presenters. The first Coffee Klatch was very well received, and attendees indicated an interest in attending future sessions featuring park rangers, crime prevention staff, neighborhood district attorneys, and others. Without the coordination role of Angela and others at Neighbors West/Northwest, the Coffee Klatch series would not have come to fruition.
Neighbors West/Northwest is a true partner of the Crime Prevention program. They support our mission of preventing crime and the fear of crime in their day to day interactions with the community. We want to thank them for all their work and we look forward to many years of great collaboration.
