PF&R installing specialized smoke alarms for deaf and people with hearing loss
Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to install free specialized smoke alarms in the homes of people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These smoke alarms that flash, shake and wake work with standard smoke alarms to alert individuals to the presence of fire or carbon monoxide. This program is only for persons living in the City of Portland.
There are a limited number of these specialized smoke alarms available and will be provided on a first come, first served basis given in order to those qualified individuals who submit an application with all appropriate paperwork. Special installation priority may be given to people with multiple risk factors.
To apply, fill out the online application available at Flash Shake Awake website. The website also offers additional information about how the program works, a guide to the program and a press release. For questions regarding the program or to have help filling out an application, contact PF&R by calling 503-823-3752.
