The City’s Disability Program will open its 2017 Disability Leadership Academy on February 18th and applications are to be submitted by next Monday, January 9th. This is an excellent opportunity for any Portlander with a disability to advance their skills in project planning, building community, navigating political systems, and more.
The Academy includes both training sessions and practical experience. Participants will have the opportunity to design and implement their own Community Engagement Project to affect public policy or create systems change. Individuals who successfully complete the Disability Leadership Academy will receive a stipend.

Please take advantage of the January 5th opportunity to discuss Charter amendments City Auditor Mary Hull Caballero will present to City Council for support. These amendments to City Charter are to protect the Auditor’s ability to hold City government accountable through independent audits and investigations. The public’s input and views will help shape the final proposal that City Council is scheduled to consider later in the month.
The meeting is Thursday, January 5, 2017, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the East Portland Community Center, 740 SE 106th Avenue. This is the meeting that was rescheduled following the cancellation of the December 15 meeting originally due to severe winter weather.
Auditor Mary Hull Caballero will describe organizational structures that create conflicts of interest between her office and executive branch bureaus the Auditor must hold accountable. Other jurisdictions have structures designed to protect auditors and investigators from impediments or reprisal for simply doing their jobs. The Auditor believes Portland should adopt changes to ensure the Auditor’s Office is able to meet the public’s expectations for transparent and accountable government.

The Portland Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA-Portland) will hold its January 2017 meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 16, at Good Samaritan Hospital. The meeting is in second floor conference room in Good Sam’s Building 2, 1040 N.W. 22nd Avenue.
The guest speaker is Audiologist Evonne Serpa, Au.D., who owns the Hearing Resources Audiology Center in Portland’s Hollywood District. Dr. Serpa will demonstrate an assortment of assistive listening devices and other tools to help people with hearing loss.
HLAA-Portland meets on the third Monday of the month, September through May. Anyone affected by hearing loss is welcome. More information about the organization is available on its website. The Portland chapter is dedicated to providing a supportive atmosphere for persons with hearing loss to meet other hard of hearing people and learn about issues related to hearing loss. The chapter meetings are real-time captioned and are equipped with a loop system (usable by wearers of hearing devices equipped with telecoils).
Clackamas County is inviting job seekers with disabilities to come and learn about its career opportunities at a “Meet Business” event on January 18. Clackamas County is currently hiring for a wide range of positions in areas such as healthcare, social service, admin/clerical, finance/accounting, engineering, and possibly more!
Job seekers who feel they would be good in one of these types of positions or would just like to learn more about career opportunities with Clackamas County, are invited to attend this event being held by Incight in partnership with Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation from 10 a.m. to noon. "Launch: Preparing for the Transition into Adulthood" is the focus of FACT’s webinar on January 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. Parents raising a child or teen experiencing disability and who are curious what school, employment, community, and formal services might look like as their child grows up are invited to join in the online session.

Public comments are currently being collected regarding a Title II Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan to address potential barriers to accessibility at three performing arts facilities owned by the City of Portland. There will be a public open house on January 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. with a plan overview at 5 p.m. in the Brunish Theatre inside Antoinette Hall, 1111 S.W. Broadway Avenue. Portlanders are asked to view the draft plan at the open house or online, then make comments that will be used to inform the final plan.
Portland’5 Centers for the Arts - the Keller Auditorium, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and Antoinette Hatfield Hall, are operated by Portland’5 in accordance with an agreement with Metro under the authority of the Metropolitan Exposition and Recreation Commission. As owner, the City has developed a Title II ADA Transition Plan to address potential barriers to accessibility at the Portland’5 facilities. Learn what it will take to remove identified potential barriers in the facilities and provide comments on the plan.

Applicants can now apply for the 2017 University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) Summer Internship Program at Oregon Health and Science University. The application period will close February 1, 2017.
Held every summer, the UCEDD Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for high school or early college students to gain experience in the disability field, develop transferable skills, and learn about various career paths in health care. Interns will receive training on disability theory, practice, and advocacy, as well as support and guidance in career planning and networking.
Interns will work 10 to 20 hours per week on a project at one of the Institute on Development and Disability units, gaining experience in research, education, training, and dissemination. After developing their own personal goals for the internship, interns will participate in activities that align with their career interests such as informational interviews, clinical shadowing, Grand Rounds, and other OHSU activities. Interns will also participate in group tours and field trips to OHSU labs, clinics, and facilities.
This internship is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care, specifically with a focus on disability. The UCEDD Summer Internship Program is a paid opportunity and runs June 12 through August 4, 2017.

Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to install free specialized smoke alarms in the homes of people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These smoke alarms that flash, shake and wake work with standard smoke alarms to alert individuals to the presence of fire or carbon monoxide. This program is only for persons living in the City of Portland.
There are a limited number of these specialized smoke alarms available and will be provided on a first come, first served basis given in order to those qualified individuals who submit an application with all appropriate paperwork. Special installation priority may be given to people with multiple risk factors.

“Getting Ready for the Big Day” is Northwest Down Syndrome Association’s (NWDSA) free kindergarten transition workshop designed for families of young children with developmental disabilities. The workshop will be Saturday, January 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the MESD Auditorium, 11611 N.E. Ainsworth Circle.
Moving from early childhood to the school years is exciting and can be confusing without tools and mentors to help navigate this transition. Participants are invited to bring their parental expertise and dreams to join with coordinators and guest speakers who want to help parents along the path of this exciting adventure. This interactive and best practices driven training covers information about the law and child’s rights, classroom tools and supports, IEP goal writing to support inclusion, communication tips from parents and more.

The Oregon Office on Disability and Health, Inclusion Inc. and the Oregon Health Authority are sponsoring a free Living Well with Chronic Conditions workshop for people with disabilities and their care providers. The workshop will be held at Inclusion Inc. in southeast Portland at 50 S.E. 18th Avenue on Thursdays, February 16 to March 9, 2017, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Communicating with 911 by texting is now available in Portland and other local communities. The Text to 911 system is for those who are deaf, have hearing loss, or find themselves in a situation in which speaking on the phone would put them in danger. The system is online in Portland and in Clackamas, Clark, Columbia, Marion, Multnomah, Washington counties.
A user’s wireless carrier sends the text messages to a “Text Control Center” which then forwards them to local 911 centers. The 911 centers receive the information via an internet-based application. If, for some reason, the internet is down, the user will receive a message telling them that text-to-911 is currently not available in their area.
To use text-to-911 in an emergency, simply open up the text messaging screen, enter “911” (with no dashes or spaces) in the “TO” field, type the message, and hit “SEND”. Do NOT send the message to multiple people in a group text, because this will stop the message from reaching the 911 dispatcher. It’s very important that always include a location to provide to 911 dispatch.
