Portland Pedestrian Advisory Committee

Description: The Portland Pedestrian Advisory Committee is a 15-person committee that advises the City on all matters that encourage and enhance walking as a means of transportation, recreation, wellness, and environmental enhancement. The Committee is comprised of a cross-section of Portlanders, including walking and mobility advocates, neighborhood activists, urban planning professionals, and residents at-large. The mission of the City of Portland Pedestrian Advisory Committee is to represent and advocate for the needs of pedestrians by:

- Reviewing and making recommendations on Capital Improvement Projects developed within the City boundaries by governmental agencies to ensure that pedestrian needs and pedestrian facilities are given full attention

- Providing staff with comment and recommendations relating to urban design and planning issues including transportation needs and other elements of the public realm and the pedestrian environment

- Reviewing and making recommendations on planning documents prepared by City bureaus affecting pedestrians and pedestrian facilities 

- Reviewing and making recommendations regarding funding priorities for Capital Improvement Projects and other activities insofar as they relate to Pedestrians 

- Advising Bureau of Transportation staff on issues related to public involvement 

- Advising City staff on issues related to promoting pedestrian safety and education

- Promoting walking as the most environmentally friendly form of transportation, and for health and recreation

- Monitoring implementation of PedPDX, Portland’s Citywide Pedestrian Master Plan (currently in progress).

Committee advises City Council on a perpetual base.

Total seats available: Up to 15

Term length: Four year

Volunteer position description: The Committee is a 15-person committee that advises the City on all matters that encourage and enhance walking as a means of transportation, recreation, wellness, and environmental enhancement. The committee is comprised of a cross-section of Portlanders, including walking and mobility advocates, neighborhood activists, urban planning professionals, and residents at-large. Members are appointed by the Commissioner in charge of Transportation, and serve four-year terms.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Be a resident or business owner in the City of Portland

- Have an interest in promoting walking for transportation, recreation, and environmental enhancement

- Have good communication skills for working on a committee

- Commit to attending one 2-hour meeting per month (currently scheduled for the third Tuesday of each month) and participating in the work of the committee.
