208 Authorize City Attorney to appear as amicus curiae to support humane treatment of all persons, regardless of their immigration status.

208 Authorize City Attorney to appear as amicus curiae to support City interests in fair treatment of immigrants (Resolution)

The City Attorney's Office has received a number of requests to join with other cities and
government entities in challenges to President Trump's executive orders relating to
immigration and "sanctuary" jurisdictions. Frequently, they receive these requests with
insufficient time to process a Resolution through the Council. The Council already has
identified the City's core interests in protecting our immigrant community, and has
authorized participation in similar amicus efforts in the past. This Resolution would give
express authority to join amicus filings in pending actions in federal courts in Massachusetts
and California, and would generally authorize the City Attorney, subject to the Mayor's
consent, to join in such efforts in other cases which implicate the City's interest in the
humane treatment of all persons, regardless of their immigration status.
