Firehouse Recipe of the Week: Honey-Glazed Sweet Potatoes

0 Comments | Add a Comment

Honey-Glazed Sweet Potatoes

Recipe courtesy of Portland Fire & Rescue's Nurse Janet Woodside

Instead of topping canned sweet potatoes with a glaze and miniature marshmallows, this version uses fresh sweet potatoes and a lighter, less gooey glaze.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4 large)
  • Cracked black pepper or chopped herb of choice (rosemary, sage or thyme)

Preparation:

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Spray a baking dish with nonstick spray.
  3. Combine water, brown sugar, honey and olive oil in a cup to form a sauce.
  4. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into wedges.
  5. Place in a single layer in the baking dish.
  6. Pour the sauce over the sweet potatoes. Turn to coat them.
  7. Cover and bake for about 45 minutes or until tender; turn the sweet potatoes once or twice to continue coating them.
  8. When tender, remove the cover and continue to bake until the glaze is set, about 15 minutes.
  9. Serve topped with cracked black pepper or chopped herb of choice.

Yield: 8 servings

Portland Fire Recruiting Officer Foster Attends Career Fair

2 Comments | Add a Comment

Portland State University’s (PSU) Native American Student Services and The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians hosted a Career and Internship Fair today, geared toward Native American and Pacific Islander students at PSU.  This event was free and open to the public as well.

Recruiting Officer Foster talks to potential firefighter applicants, explaining what their path to become a firefighter could look like.

Portland Fire & Rescue’s (PF&R) Recruiting Officer Terry Foster was on hand to answer questions and provide information about the two different routes to become a Portland firefighter.  Foster greeted interested students and community members, offering information about the Firefighter Trainee Program and the Firefighter/EMT Program here at PF&R.

PF&R's Firefighter Trainee Program targets applicants with little or no fire service experience and consists of a "earn while you learn," comprehensive, paid, eight-week training program located at PF&R's Training Center. Applicants receive hands-on experience with the tools of the trade, and advance to the strenous physical fitness level required of a firefighter. During this program, Firefighter Trainees work a 40-hour work schedule.  Learn more here.

PF&R's Firefighter EMT/Paramedic Program targets applicants with fire experience or an education background in fire science and who currently have a minimum of an EMT-B certification. Learn more here

Interested firefighter candidates are encouraged to attend the event and also sign up on PF&R’s Firefighter Recruitment Notification list in order to receive periodic hiring updates by email.

Other participating organizations at today's career fair included the Indian Health Service, Native American Youth & Family Center, Portland General Electric, Oregon Health and Science University, Center Coastal Margin Observation & Prediction, Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, US Bonneville Power Administration, Northwest Inter-Tribal Timber, Safeway, PSU School of Business Admin. & Career Center, Nike, Intel Corporation, NARA NW, and Walmart.

Did you miss today's career fair?  Don't worry - Recruiting Officer Terry Foster will be attending additional local career and informational fairs to talk about becoming a PF&R firefighter in the upcoming months. Check back on the blog for these important dates!

NEWS RELEASE 01/28/11: Portland Fire & Rescue Arson Investigators Make Arrests in Two Separate Fires

0 Comments | Add a Comment

January 28, 2011

8:29 AM

Portland Fire Investigators have made arrests in two separate cases. On August 12, 2009, a fire occurred in a duplex at 735 SE 155th Avenue. The fire eventually spread from the south duplex unit to the north duplex unit, threatening a family who lived there.

On November 16, 2010, Gabriela Washington (DOB 3/15/56) was indicted by a grand jury after investigators concluded that she intentionally set the fire in the duplex unit she was living in. Washington turned herself in to authorities on January 21, 2011, and was charged with two counts of Arson I, a Measure 11 crime. Washington is currently in jail pending trial and her bail has been set at $500,000.

"Each count of Arson I, a felony offense, carries a maximum fine of $50,000 and up to 20 years in jail," said Public Information Officer Paul Corah. "Arson I can become a Measure 11 crime in cases where there is a threat of serious physical injury to an individual. This was the case for the family living in the duplex unit next to Ms. Washington."

In a second case, a fire occurred at 225 NW Couch, #250 at 4:08 am on January 22, 2011. Firefighters responded to the apartment building and extinguished the fire, which was contained to the unit of origin. Reports indicate that residents of the apartment building saw smoke, pulled the occupant from his apartment, and attempted to extinguish the fire prior to fire crews' arrival. A resident was transported to a local hospital for fire-related injuries.

Upon release from the hospital, Fire Investigators arrested Donya Mallory (DOB 10/24/78) and charged him with one count of Arson I. Investigators believe that Mallory intentionally set combustibles in the apartment on fire. Mallory is currently in police custody awaiting a grand jury hearing next week. Bail is set at $50,000.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSA) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from thousands of types of consumer products. Click here to find information on product recalls and search recalled products on the CPSA’s Recall and Product Safety News webpage.

In January 2011, CPSA announced 36 product recalls. Several items were recalled because they create fire hazards - this included generators, food dehydrators, propane gas sold in portable cylinders, LED lamps, programmable thermostats, dehumidifier, and oven rack guards. Portland Fire & Rescue wants to make sure you’re aware of the below recalled products:

Stay informed of recalled products by bookmarking or adding CPSA’s website http://www.cpsc.gov/ to your favorites and check it often.  You can also sign up on CPSA’s subscription list to receive emails about recalled products. Visit https://www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.aspx to join.

PF&R Accelerant Dog & Handler Pays Fire Commissioner Randy Leonard a Visit

Portland Fire & Rescue's (PF&R) Accelerant Detection Canine Team, made up of Fire Lieutenant and Arson Investigator Jackson and Labrador "Lila," paid a visit to Fire Commissioner Randy Leonard yesterday in downtown Portland.

PF&R obtained Lila through a partnership with the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Lila was trained in the ATF's Accelerant Detection Canine Program, and after several months in the program, she met her handler, PF&R Investigator Jackson. Lila and her handler trained together in Front Royal, Virginia, for an additional six weeks – seven days a week – before they began working together at PF&R.

Arson canines such as Lila can be instrumental in the investigation of fire scenes. Trained to detect and alert to microliters of petroleum-based fuels, Lila’s nose can make the difference between determining the cause of a fire or not. Accelerant canines have had better results detecting accelerants than electronic detection devices. Although hydrocarbon detectors can be quite sensitive, accelerant canines can pinpoint traces of accelerants at levels lower than the detectors can register. Additionally, detectors do not discriminate between burned petroleum-based items normally found at a fire scene, like foam cushions, and items that might contain an ignitable liquid. Accelerant canines can, and do, detect those differences.

Accelerant canines also save time and resources at a fire scene. What might take an hour of fire-scene process time can take only minutes with a trained canine assistant. In some cases, the fire damage is so severe that burn patterns are obliterated. Even in a total burn out, the canine is able to detect trace evidence left behind.
