Disaster preparedness became a renewed priority for our Nation as a direct response to the devastation of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Following the tragedies of that day, government at all levels has worked more closely with civic and private sector organizations and the public to prepare for emergencies.

Portland Fire & Rescue encourages all citizens to become fully aware, trained, and practiced on how to respond to potential threats and hazards.

Remember, preparedness starts with YOU! Everyone should:

• Have an emergency supply kit.
• Make a family escape plan.
• Be informed about the types of emergencies that can happen in your community and how your family will respond.

Each person's needs and abilities are unique but every individual can take important steps to prepare for all kinds of emergencies – including fire emergencies - and put plans in place.

Penne with Italian Turkey Sausage

Ingredients:

• 1/2 lb. hot or sweet Italian turkey sausage
• Nonfat cooking spray
• 1/2 c. chopped red onion
• 1 garlic clove, minced
• 8 oz. sliced mushrooms
• 1 small red pepper, seeded and cut into strips
• 1 small yellow pepper, seeded and cut into strips
• 1 small zucchini cut in half lengthwise, then sliced
• 1 (14.5 ounce) can no-salt diced tomatoes with garlic and oregano
• 1/4 c. fat free sour cream
• 4 hot cooked whole wheat penne pasta (½ pound dry)
• 1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper 

Preparation:

1. Prepare pasta according to package.
2. While pasta is cooking, remove sausage from casing and cook in large non-stick skillet coated with cooking spray until browned, stir to crumble.
3. Add onion and garlic, sauté for 2 minutes, stirring.
4. Add mushrooms, peppers and zucchini; sauté for 5 minutes or until turkey is cooked through and veggies are tender.
5. Stir in tomatoes and cook to heat through.
6. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream, drained hot pasta, and pepper.

Update 8:18 PM

Portland Fire & Rescue was dispatched on a commercial fire at 1730 SW Harbor Way at 3:45 pm today.  While driving to the location, firefighters observed thick black smoke billowing from the commercial building's roof. Arriving two minutes after being dispatched, firefighters quickly called for a 2nd alarm or 30 additional firefighters to assist with controlling the fire.  

Using a raised bucket, firefighters immediately began attacking the fire on the roof of the building. They then pulled fire hoses to mop up the fire.  There was some difficulty in extinguishing one portion of the fire due to a natural gas line in the area.

Firefighters contained the fire to the roof of the building. There was some water and smoke damage to the interior of the building as well as some damage to the roof structure.  The full extent of the damage is unknown at this time. All tenants occupying the upper condos will be displaced indefinitely. The fire was controlled at 1710 hours.

Fire investigators are on scene.  The fire cause is under investigation at this time.

** THE CONTROLLED BURN HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2011 DUE TO HIGH TEMPERATURES AND STRONG EAST WINDS. **

With weather permitting on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) and Gresham Fire & Emergency Services (GF&ES) will be conducting a controlled burn of two grassland areas in the southeast section of Powell Butte Nature Park. The burn will reduce non-native shrubs and brambles that pose an increased risk of wildfires on the butte and will benefit birds and wildlife, help re-establish native vegetation, improve the park experience for visitors, and provide a training opportunity for Portland firefighters.

PF&R and GF&ES will begin the burn by deliberately setting controlled blazes to burn 24 acres and will be on-site during the burn to assist with fire control. The burn site will be carefully monitored by onsite fire personnel for several days after burn begins for any excessive smoke conditions and/or fire flare-ups.

Please note that Powell Butte Nature Park will be open for use during the burn, but public access will be restricted to certain areas away from the fire zone, including the Johnson Creek Trail, Pioneer Orchard Trail, Orchard Loop viewpoint, and Wild Hawthorne Trail.

Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), the Wildland Unit of Portland Fire, Portland Bureau of Environmental Services and the Portland Water Bureau (PWB) are collaborating on the first of three planned prescriptive burns at natural area grassland habitats within the city. Powell Butte will be the site of the first operation, with Baltimore Woods and Elk Rock Island Natural Areas being scheduled for later in this summer or early fall.

Additional Information

For the past 15 years, PP&R and PF&R have worked together to plan and implement small prescriptive burns to improve the ecological health of grassland and oak woodland habitats in several Parks Natural Areas and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire by removing hazardous fuels. These prescriptive burns also provide important training opportunities for PF&R firefighters to learn and practice techniques of wildland firefighting operations and management.
