Public Educators Visit Sabin Elementary School

Fire Inspector Alice Johnson addresses students

This month, Fire Inspectors Trudi Salisbury and Alice Johnson paid a visit to the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Language Arts classes at Sabin Elementary School.

During their classroom outreach they presented information on how to prepare for an emergency or natural disaster, which was mainly geared towards earthquakes. The emphasis of the presentation was to "make a kit, make a plan, get trained" and included information on how to "prepare-respond-recover."

Prior to the presentation the students learned about volcanoes, earthquakes, and other natural phenomena that could lead to disasters. There was an overall positive and interactive response to the classroom visit.

  • ¼ c fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • ½ c diced celery
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp dried dill
  • 2 tbsp horseradish
  • ½ c fat-free mayonnaise
  • ground black pepper, to taste
  • 4 medium tomatoes, cored and quartered
  • 4-8 Bibb lettuce leaves

Preparation:

  1. When shrimp is thawed, remove tails as necessary and drain.
  2. Spray nonstick medium sauté pan and heat over medium heat.
  3. Sauté onion until translucent, add shrimp and cook until just warmed through and mixed with the onions.
  4. Transfer to a bowl. Cover and refrigerate until cool.
  5. While shrimp and onions are cooling, chop apples and toss with lemon juice in large bowl.
  6. Add celery, dill, and parsley; toss again.
  7. Add shrimp and onions when cool and toss again.
  8. In a small bowl, mix together the horseradish, mayonnaise and pepper. Dress shrimp mixture.

Give Your Safety Seat a Check Up

Throughout the year, fire agencies across Oregon host Child Passenger Safety Clinics at fire stations and other safety venues for the public. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and trained volunteers from the Child Safety Seat Resource Center are available at the clinics to work one-on-one with parents and caregivers to correctly install and inspect child safety seats.  Each seat takes about 40 minutes to install and check for damage, size, and age appropriateness. Click here to access the 2012 safety clinic schedule for Oregon.

Locally, Child Passenger Safety Clinics are being held each month in Portland, Beaverton, Gresham, Clackamas, and Hillsboro.  The events listed below are held from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Portland Fire & Rescue reminds you of the following important State of Oregon Child Occupant Protection Laws:

  • Child passengers must be restrained in approved child safety seats until they weigh 40 pounds.
  • Infants must ride rear facing until they reach both one year of age AND 20 pounds.
  • Children over 40 pounds must use a booster seat until they are age 8 OR 4'9" in height.
  • A child taller than 4'9" OR age 8 or older must be properly secured with the vehicle's safety belt. The child is properly secured if the lap belt is positioned low across the thighs and the shoulder belt is positioned over the collarbone and away from the neck.

The failure to properly use safety belts or child restraints is a Class D traffic violation with a $142.00 fine (ORS 811.210 and ORS 815.055, effective October 1, 2009).
