Firefighter Trainee


Candidates who have little to no fire experience are encouraged to apply as Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) Firefighter Trainees.

The Firefighter Trainee application process is designed to give individuals with or without an EMT certification the opportunity to be successful in the Fire Service by receiving hands-on exposure to the requirements of this career. Candidates will receive exposure to the tools of the trade and develop the physical fitness level required of a firefighter.

Firefighter Trainee General Qualifications

To apply as a Firefighter Trainee, a candidate must meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  •  May or may not have an EMT-B certificate.  If a candidate does possess a current EMT-B at the time of application and meet ANY of the criteria listed below, you do not qualify for the Firefighter Trainee Program. Criteria are as follows:

  • Possess an Associate’s Degree or higher in the field of fire science at the time of application.
  • Any paid non-probationary professional firefighter experience
  • Have more than 12 months of firefighter volunteer  experience.  Time is determined by hire date not by accumulative hours of training/drilling/sleeper/resident. Months of volunteer experience is determined by total months employed by any fire department(s) even if the months are not consecutive.
  • Possess a paramedic license 

Documentation may be requested at any time during the testing and hiring process. 

Trainee Program Description

Firefighter Trainees work a 40-hour work schedule as they develop the basic skills to advance to Phase II training which involves more advanced training to further develop a candidate to meet the demands of emergency response, code enforcement and customer service. Candidates who are successful in the recruitment process may be provided opportunities to attain their EMT certification which is a requirement for the position. Firefighter Trainees will work with candidates from the Firefighter EMT or Paramedic eligibility list to develop the skills and traits necessary to attain the desired qualifications and characteristics desired to advance through the training program. Minimum of EMT level of certification is required by the time of conditional offer. Out of state or country EMT certification reciprocity for the State of Oregon must be received by Conditional Offer of Employment.

Firefighter Trainee Salary for Fiscal Year 2017-18

  • $14.01/ hour first 30 days as a Trainee (40 hour work week)
  • $21.37/ hour months 1-6 (40 hour work week)
  • $20.84/hour months 7-12 (51.69 hour work week)
  • After 5 years, $29.88/hour, $80,312 per year
