In 2010 the citizens of Portland passed a General Obligation Bond that provides funding to reconstruct Portland Fire & Rescue Station 21, located at 5 SE Madison on the east bank of the Willamette river. The new station is scheduled to be complete by Fall 2014 and will be constructed on the same footprint as the original station. Planned features of the new station include:
Seismic codes require that steel piles and grout columns be placed beneath the new station. These seismic upgrade requirements make it more cost effective to demolish the existing building. The new station will consist of two stories to the west for firefighter work space and a community meeting room. One story will face east for fire fighting apparatus and equipment.
The Eastbank Esplanade side of the building will be more inviting and interesting for public interaction than the previous station design. Windows at the northeast corner along the Eastbank Esplanade will provide views into the apparatus area. Future plans include the placement of historic firefighting equipment just inside these windows for public viewing.
