Q: In what year did firefighters in Portland, Oregon begin receiving wages?
A: In 1903, a civil-service system was implemented in the City of Portland. This brought about the formation of a fully paid fire department in 1904. Funding for the first modern fireboat, the George H. Williams, was also secured at that time.
