Firefighters from Portland played golf alongside fellow firefighters from Salem, Hillsboro, and other local fire departments in the annual Hillsboro Firefighter Random Acts of Kindness/National Fallen Firefighter Foundation Charity Golf Tournament held Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Reserve Vineyard and Golf Club in Aloha, Oregon. The golf tournament began around 1:00 pm, and was followed by a dinner buffet, silent auction, and awards.
Seventeen teams played to raise money to benefit the Hillsboro Random Acts of Kindness organization and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, both 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organizations. The Random Acts of Kindness organization was started in 1994 by Hillsboro firefighters who wanted a way to assist people in need beyond putting out their fires and providing emergency medical services. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was created to honor fallen fire heroes and help their families and co-workers. The organization offers direct assistance to firefighters' families following a line-of-duty death, scholarships for spouses and children of firefighters killed in action, and networking and grief support for families and coworkers following a death.
The top three winners of the golf tournament include:
1st Team Salem Fire – Bob Benson, James Gunia, Greg Miller, Reed Godfrey
2nd Team Seidel – Gary Seidel, Larry Sparks, Tim Seidel, Nick Rizzo
3rd Team Portland Fire & Rescue – Ed Fitzgerald, Jerold Fitzgerald, Duane Bray, Jerrod O'Dell
