How Are Firefighting Gloves Like Oven Mitts?

Lieutenant Lorin and Firefighters Chad, Andrew, and Daniel from Station 5 visited with some very excited campers at Camp Gan Israel this afternoon in SW Portland.
Campers, ages 5 to 11, learned about emergency equipment and protective clothing firefighters use and wear. Lieutenant Lorin explained to the campers that firefighters wear gloves like oven mits in order to keep safe from burning or hurting their hands during fires. A volunteer was even chosen to try on Firefighter Daniel’s Air Purifying Respirator (APR) Mask.
Campers also were given a brief tour of Engine 5 before the crew was called away to respond to an emergency. While Portland Fire & Rescue firefighters enjoy interacting with the community, they are on active duty even during station tours and community visits and can be called away at a moments notice.
