Another resident, male, reported to crews on scene that his shoulder was injured when he attempted to catch one of the residents that jumped from the upstairs window to escape the fire.

Update:  10:19am

Investigators have determined that a candle left burning throughout the night was responsible for the fire.  There were also four residents, not two, that had to jump from a window to escape the fire.  Everyone was very fortunate to have escaped in time.

Take time to ensure your candles are safe.  Keep things that can burn away from them.  Use candle holders that protect the flame and provide a solid base.  And above all blow them out before you go out, or go to bed....Think Safe.

**Update**
An injury occurred to one of PF&R's firefighters, Rian Fields, during the transition period from firefighting to overhaul activities.  While the 8 year veteran was pulling ceilings a large section came down and struck him on the head, sustaining injuries to his head and neck.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Portland Fire responded to a residential fire located at 5934 N Borthwick Ave at 6:53am.  Responding crews knew it was a "working fire" due to the column of black smoke they could see.  Upon arrival firefighters noted that the whole front end of the home was fully involved.  A defensive mode was established immediately due to reports of all residents being out of the structure. 

Special precautions were taken due to a downed arcing power line to the south of the house.  After the main body of the fire was knocked down, crews entered the structure to attack the remaining fires.  The fire was recalled at 7:19am.

There were 5 people, three females and two males, living there that Red Cross will be assisting with temporary housing.  One of the females twisted her ankle when she and one of the other residents escaped the fire by jumping out of a window.  There were no other noted injuries.  It was noted by firefighters that there were no smoke detectors present in the home.

Investigators are on scene and the cause of the fire will be posted as soon as it is determined.

Remember that smoke detectors save lives.  Please be sure that you have them in your home and that they are in working condition.  Place one in each bedroom, outside of the sleeping areas and one on each level of your home.  You should also test them once a month.
