PF&R Provides Free Smoke Alarms to Single Family Home Owners Until October 31, 2010

Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) kicked off a three-week long campaign on October 9th to hand out free smoke alarms to owners of single family homes in Portland.
"Portland Fire & Rescue wants to make sure that every home in Portland has the appropriate number of working smoke alarms," said Fire Marshal Erin Janssens. "This is the single most important step that homeowners can take to significantly increase their chances of surviving a fire."
Until October 31st, single-family home owners can visit any Portland Fire Station and receive needed free smoke alarms, to be self installed. To find a list of fire station locations in Portland, visit http://www.portlandonline.com/fire/stations or call PF&R's Smoke Alarm Hotline at 503-823-3752.
PF&R reminds citizens that smoke alarms should be installed in each bedroom, on every floor of the home, and replaced if ten years or older.

Our smoke alarm program with Portland Fire & Rescue does have provisions for the hearing impaired if they qualify by need. It is a different program than our current outreach as presented above. If someone has a need, we ask that they contact our smoke alarm hotline at 503-823-3752 to see if they qualify. Community organizations who assist the hearing impaired often have assistance efforts as well.
