Portland firefighters responded to reports of a house on fire at 5315 NE Rodney Ave., between NE Emerson St. and NE Killingsworth St., at 6:33 am. A neighbor reported that she heard a loud noise, followed by her power going out. When she noticed the house next door was on fire, she immediately called 9-1-1, and quickly evacuated her family to their front yard.
Firefighters were first on scene just under four minutes from the time it was dispatched at 6:37 am. Firefighters found active fire coming from the back of the 2 1/2 story residential structure, which was for sale and reportedly vacant. Firefighters performed a primary search and determined that there was no one inside. They knocked down the fire in the basement and first floor of the home and brought the fire under control at 7:03 am. A Fire Investigator was called to the scene and is working to determine the fire's cause. Damage estimates are not yet available.
Portland Fire & Rescue reminds citizens to have a home escape plan in place for you and your family in case you need to evacuate due to a fire-related emergency. It is important to practice your plan often. A fire can happen at any time of the day or night, so be prepared to know your escape route and get out.
