Portland Fire & Rescue responded to it's second chicken coop fire in 24 hours on Thanksgiving night at 8:31 pm. The residential fire was reported at 2419 SE 71st Ave. Initial reports were that a detached garage was on fire.
The first arriving crews encountered a detached garage with significant fire involvement on the interior of the structure. Hose lines were advanced and the fire was quickly knocked down. Firefighters on scene heard bystanders asking about the chickens and if the firefighters could save them; a quick opening of the pen by firefighters saved all the chickens. "A Firefighter on scene said rescuing the chickens was the easy part, catching them after the fire was the hard part," said Paul Corah, PF&R's PIO.
"The City of Portland has seen a three-fold increase in urban farms in the past two years," said Corah. "We expect to see an increase in animal related fires. The City reminds citizens that you can only have three chickens per household, and yes, no roosters."
Damage to the garage was $10,000 and Fire Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
