Portland Fire's Newest Boat Makes a Rescue

Posted at 6:28 pm

Portland Fire & Rescue's newest boat the Eldon Trinity was once again pressed into service today.  This time instead of a fire the boat made it possible for it's crew from Station 21 to rescue a boater who's kayak had capsized in the Willamette river near OMSI.  The kayaker said that he was in the water for about 10 minutes before he was rescued and was unable to get back into his boat because of the cold water.

Firefighters were able to pull the man and his kayak from the water and immediately began treating him for hypothermia.  The victim Djamdel Unkob a 29 year old PSU student stated that the boat was a sight for sore eyes as he could no longer feel his legs.  The water temperature in the Willamette is currently around 44 degrees.  At this Temp. exhaustion and unconsciousness can occur within 30-40 minutes.

Mr. Unkob was brought back to Station 21 where he was able to warm up.  Mr. Unkob  recovered quickly and didn't require transport to the hospital.  Mr. Unkob thanked the firefighters, returned his kayak and went home.

Note-Djamdel Unkob has made himself available for interviews.  His number is available for media use only.
