Portland State University’s (PSU) Native American Student Services and The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians hosted a Career and Internship Fair today, geared toward Native American and Pacific Islander students at PSU.  This event was free and open to the public as well.

Recruiting Officer Foster talks to potential firefighter applicants, explaining what their path to become a firefighter could look like.

Portland Fire & Rescue’s (PF&R) Recruiting Officer Terry Foster was on hand to answer questions and provide information about the two different routes to become a Portland firefighter.  Foster greeted interested students and community members, offering information about the Firefighter Trainee Program and the Firefighter/EMT Program here at PF&R.

PF&R's Firefighter Trainee Program targets applicants with little or no fire service experience and consists of a "earn while you learn," comprehensive, paid, eight-week training program located at PF&R's Training Center. Applicants receive hands-on experience with the tools of the trade, and advance to the strenous physical fitness level required of a firefighter. During this program, Firefighter Trainees work a 40-hour work schedule.  Learn more here.

PF&R's Firefighter EMT/Paramedic Program targets applicants with fire experience or an education background in fire science and who currently have a minimum of an EMT-B certification. Learn more here. 
 

Interested firefighter candidates are encouraged to attend the event and also sign up on PF&R’s Firefighter Recruitment Notification list in order to receive periodic hiring updates by email.

Other participating organizations at today's career fair included the Indian Health Service, Native American Youth & Family Center, Portland General Electric, Oregon Health and Science University, Center Coastal Margin Observation & Prediction, Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, US Bonneville Power Administration, Northwest Inter-Tribal Timber, Safeway, PSU School of Business Admin. & Career Center, Nike, Intel Corporation, NARA NW, and Walmart.
