Fire Crews Battle Blaze At Vacant Car Wash - Portland fire crews responded to a fire at the Lucky Car Wash near Southeast 82nd Avenue and Tibbetts Street early this morning. When they arrived at about 1:30 a.m., they found the fire burning inside the abandoned building.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Last month at the Lucky Car Wash, Portland police shot and killed a homeless man, 67-year-old Tom Higginbotham. On Jan. 2, police responded to reports of a man threatening a security guard at the Powell Street Shopping Center. Police say they found the homeless man inside the abandoned car wash, where he confronted them with a knife.
Investigators say the man refused to drop the weapon, even after being tased. Two officers then shot and killed Higginbotham. A grand jury later cleared the officers of any wrongdoing in the shooting.
