Tonight at 6:00 pm, Portland Fire & Rescue will welcome the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation. The fire engine will be at Station 1 at 8:00pm. Members of the Foundation will have dinner with Portland Firefighters at Station 1 and will also spend the night at the firehouse.

About the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation-

The CODE 3 FOR A CURE FOUNDATION is a team of firefighter/cancer survivors, both active and retired, who drive a fire engine over 20,000 miles each year across America and Canada to encourage early cancer screenings to firefighters and the general public. Throughout their journey, they pickup firefighters from different parts of the country to ride with them for a short while and share their cancer testimonials.

On the CODE 3 fire engine, pictured above. is an empty seat where a memorial fire bell with the American and Canadian flags draped over it is carried. This seat signifies the loss of a firefighter due to cancer. The team collects the names of firefighters who have died from cancer and those names are placed in a special compartment located at the base of the memorial fire bell. At the end of each mission, each firefighter is honored and remembered by reading off their names in a fire department ceremony in Los Angeles, California at the Memorial Fire Station 27. The team is committed to honoring the firefighter's sacrifices in paving the way for better safety equipment used by firefighters of today.

The purpose of the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation is to:

  • Provide financial assistance to active and retired firefighters diagnosed with cancer who are facing a financial hardship. * Firefighters who receive financial assistance will not be required or requested to repay it.
  • Assist active and retired firefighters diagnosed with cancer by providing them with referrals to other nonprofit organizations, as well as providing them with support by giving encouragement and sharing our experiences. (The Foundation does not provide medical advice.)
  • Provide financial support to other nonprofit organizations conducting cancer research and/or assisting firefighter cancer victims and their families.
