All of Portland Fire & Rescue’s (PF&R) Firefighter Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basics, Intermediates, and Paramedics are going through their bi-annual State EMT recertification. The recertification process involves confirming all the Continuing Medical Education (CME) has been completed in categories such as Trauma Emergencies, Medical Emergencies, Pediatrics and Obstetric Emergencies, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Airway Breathing, and Cardiology Emergencies. Skills in airway management, IV’s, splinting, and immobilization need to be demonstrated as well.
Firefighter EMT-Basics are required to have a minimum of 24-hours of CME with half of it being hands-on training.
EMT-Intermediates are required to have a minimum of 36 hours of CME, and Paramedics are required to have a minimum of 48 hours of CME.
The State does a background check on every EMT-Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic as they process the recertification ‘paperwork’. For the first time, PF&R’s EMT Basics, Intermediates, and Paramedics are filling out and submitting paperwork online.
