At 5:48 pm, Portland firefighters were dispatched to reports of a residential fire at 4844 NE 28th Avenue. Upon arrival firefighters from NE Portland's Station 14 encountered a fire in the kitchen. Reports indicate that an occupant was cooking with grease, which was left unattended, and a fire broke out. The fire spread to the surrounding cabinets and the kitchen began to burn. First arriving firefighters were able to quickly pull a hose line into the kitchen and applied water to knock down the blaze.
The fire was brought under control at 6:00 pm. Portland Fire & Rescue reminds citizens that cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S. When cooking, stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the stove. If a cooking fire starts, smother it with a pot lid and never throw water on a grease fire. Most importantly, if a fire breaks out in your home, get out and call 9-1-1.
