On Saturday, May 21st, Station 1 Captain Dan Bucker, Station 1 Firefighters and Public Information Staff hosted 46 Mayors and Chinese Ministry Officials from all over China who came to Station 1 to learn about the American fire service and other city services.
The 46 visitors spent the morning touring Station 1 at 55 SW Ash, learning about PF&R's organizational structure, watching firefighters demonstrate how their equipment and vehicles work, and learning about PF&R's emergency operations and specialty rescue teams.
Additionally, the delegation had the opportunity to learn about how Portland Fire is using social media - especially the Fire Blog, Facebook, and Twitter - to push out information to the public about emergency incidents, activities, and services PF&R provides.
Although the delegation brought their own interpreters, Portland Fire was fortunate to have our Business Operations Manager, Jay Guo, on hand who speaks fluent Mandarin and was able to speak with the Mayors in their own language.
At the conclusion of their visit, the group presented Station 1 with tokens of their appreciation including a porcelain tea pot made in a Chinese city famous for beautiful porcelain and a scroll. It was a pleasure to host these visitors at Station 1 and we wish them all the best on their visit to Portland.
