Firefighters from Portland Fire & Rescue Stations 8, 17, and 22 participated alongside companies from the Vancouver Fire Department to tour the Thunderbird Inn on Hayden Island.
Recently marked “Unsafe”, the tour through the old inn which has been abandoned for over 6 years was done to show Fire Stations that would be responding to a fire at the inn, the potential hazards that they would encounter inside the building.
A building marked “unsafe” is due to their construction, use, state of maintenance or extraordinary hazards to emergency personnel. An “unsafe building” will only be those that pose a threat to firefighters and members involved in an emergency response.
Recent firefighter injuries and deaths around the nation due to building collapse have made it a priority for Portland Fire & Rescue to identify these “unsafe” buildings. Along with a thorough walk through, the buildings are marked with a large “U” to warn firefighters of the potential hazard.
