NEWS RELEASE 08/11/11: Portland Firefighters Respond to Tragic Accident At Portland Meadows

August 11, 2011
8:33 AM

At 7:13 am, firefighters from North Portland Fire Station 8 responded to a trauma call at the Portland Meadows horse racing track located at 1001 N. Schmeer.  Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a female trainer in her 40's who had sustained severe head trauma after being kicked by a horse she was working with.  The accident occurred just outside the horse stables near a washing area.  Her husband, a fellow trainer, was present at the time of the accident.

Portland Fire paramedic/EMTs administered CPR to the individual, but were unable to revive her at the scene.   An investigation into the accident is underway and there is no further information available at this time.

Portland Meadows has been in operation since 1946 and hosts both American and Thoroughbred horse races.  These horses can range in weight between 1,200 and 1,400 pounds.  The track plays host to two large feature horse races each year.
