Entry Level Firefighter Application Process
The City of Portland application process for entry level firefighter consists of multiple phases. The number and order of phases are subject to change without prior notice. For each application process, the examination phases will be listed on the official job announcement. Only those applicants who pass each phase of the examination will be invited to continue in the process.
The recruitment process includes an application period, written examination, a physical agility test, panel interviews, Chief's Interview, various background checks. Subject to change without notice.
The Written Exam
The written examination is currently administered by the National Testing Network. Full details will be provided on the job announcement.
Physical Agility Test

The Oral Interview / Chief's Panel Interview

Background Check & Medical Examination
Following the development of the eligible hire list, offers of employment are made to successful firefighter candidates with the condition that candidates pass an in-depth background check and comprehensive medical examination. The Chief of the Bureau has final authority to hire candidates.
