NEWS RELEASE 06/30/12: Portland Fire & Rescue Responds To A Pin-in Accident In SE Portland

June 30, 2012

7:57 PM

At 6:07 pm Portland Fire & Rescue, along with Clackamas Fire District #1, responded to a roll over accident at 7531 SE Barbara Welch Rd. After receiving information that one victim was trapped in the vehicle, the roll over was upgraded to a pin-in accident and additional resources were sent to the scene. The crew from Station 29 (Powellhurst) arrived within a matter of minutes and found one vehicle in the brush about ten feet off the road. One victim was outside the vehicle and another victim was trapped in the front passenger seat. The vehicle was on its tires but the passenger side was up against a tree roughly 6-8 inches in diameter.

The crew from Truck 7 (Mill Park) deployed their extrication equipment (Jaws of Life) and proceeded to cut the roof off of the vehicle to better access the victim. Two hose lines were put in place to protect the victim and firefighters in case the vehicle caught on fire. A second ambulance was requested due to the number of patients.

At 6:31 pm, 24 minutes after fire crews initially responded, the victim was successfully extricated from the vehicle and both patients were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The incident was under control at 6:33 pm and all Portland fire crews remained on scene working. This incident required a total of 3 fire engines, 1 fire truck, 1 chief and 2 ambulances.

Though the cause of the accident is unknown, Portland Fire & Rescue wants to remind its citizens to always exercise the proper amount of caution when driving in inclement weather
