NEWS RELEASE 08/09/12: Portland Fire & Rescue Responds to Early Morning Commercial Fire

911 operators dispatched Portland Fire & Rescue to fire at Franz Family Bakery (340 NE 11Th Ave)at 2:25 this morning. Employees were evacuating as fire crews arrived just moments later. Station 13 (Lloyd Center) arrived to "light smoke with some visible flame from the roof", said Fire Lieutenant Rose Brock who was incident commander of the scene. Station 1 (Downtown), Engine 21 (Hawthorne Bridge) and Engine 9 (Belmont) arrived shortly thereafter to assist with evacuation, securing a water supply, and to help identify hot spots.
The fire started on a muffin griddle and extended up a metal chimney exhaust. The exhaust was equipped with an automatic sprinkler which helped contain the fire. Fire crews remained on scene to pull back the walls surrounding the chimney to assure that the fire didn't get into the wooden supports of the structure. No one was hurt in this incident.
