At 5:39 pm Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a report of two people stranded on an island in Johnson Creek. The crew from Station 29 (Powellhurst) arrived six minutes later at SE 112th and Brookside Drive and requested a swift-water rescue response. It was discovered that one adult male and one adult female had not been aware of the rising water and had no way off the island.

Swift-Water Rescue Teams from Portland's Station 1 (Old Town) and Gresham Fire & Emergency Services (Station 75) arrived at 6:07 pm and formulated a rescue plan. A raft was used in conjunction with a rope system and rescue divers to reach the two victims. At 6:34 pm they were brought safely to shore.

Both victims were evaluated at the scene and were not transported to the hospital. They were also offered housing for the evening but refused.
