On Friday, May 24 at 8:45pm, Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire at 5625 N Denver Avenue. Engine 24 (Overlook/Swan Island) arrived at 8:48pm and found smoke coming from the front door and basement of a one story house. Fire crews entered the house and searched the smoke filled basement to find the fire. Fire crews found the fire in a room in the basement and extinguished it. Firefighters also searched the basement and house for possible occupants. The fire was under control at 9:06pm.

There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The value of the house and contents was determined as $179,000 with a damage estimate of $40,000.

Later that evening at 10:35pm, Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a second house fire at 3445 NE Peerless Place. Engine 28 (Rose City/Hollywood) arrived four minutes later (10:39pm) and found fire coming out of the back of the house on the first floor. Fire crews entered the first floor and began extinguishing the fire. Fire crews then noticed a 3' x 2' hole in the floor with fire in the basement. More firefighters were sent to extinguish the fire in the basement while firefighters were advised to avoid the hole in the floor. At the same time, fire crews searched the home for possible occupants. An extra fire truck was called to assist the fire crews due to the extent of the fire and the size of the house.
