NEWS RELEASE 7/8/13: Portland Fire & Rescue Responds to Simultaneous House Fires

PF&R crews returned to the scene at 10923 NE Fremont this evening when smoldering material in the attic re-ignited. The fire was reported at 4:53pm. Crews arrived to find heavy fire and smoke and began a "defensive" or exterior attack of the fire. Minutes into the call an "emergency alert" was activated by the Incident Commander to notify the on-scene crews that due to the heavy fire exposure the roof of the residence was beginning to sag, indicating imminent collapse. Crews continued to fight the fire from the exterior until the fire was finally considered under control at 5:23. Crews remained on-scene for over another hour to finish mop up and assist the investigation team with determining a cause. Investigation report is not yet available but will updated ASAP.

At 5:15am Portland Fire & Rescue responded to the report of a house fire at 10923 NE Fremont St. When Ladder Truck 2 arrived they found heavy fire and smoke at the 1.5 story house. Initially an interior fire attack was attempted by the first arriving crews, but those crews were forced retreat due to the hazardous fire conditions. An exterior or "defensive" fire attack continued while crews evacuated nearby homes that were close enough to be in danger of fire spread from the primary home. A downed power line created an additional hazard to the fire & rescue crews. It was reported that smoke was heavy enough to cause some visibility issues on neighboring I-84. Fire investigators are still compiling information for cause and damage assessment. This was an unoccupied home and no injuries were reported.
As crews were working to contain the fire on NE Fremont, another residential fire was dispatched at 4205 SE 26th ave at 5:44am. This fire appeared to have started in the attic of a two story home. When crews arrived they found smoke issuing from roof vents and immediately sent teams in with hose lines and entry tools. Once inside the home crews cut into ceilings and walls to expose the fire. The quick discovery and extinguishment of the fire allowed firefighters to contain the incident to the attic. One resident and two dogs were displaced until repairs can be made. No injuries reported.
These simultaneous events demonstrate how quickly our fire and rescue resources can be put to the test. PF&R would like to remind residents of the importance to call 911 with clear and accurate information so that crews can arrive quickly and safely mitigate your emergency.
