NEWS RELEASE 7/16/13: Portland Fire & Rescue Responds to Brush Fire on Hayden Island

At 11:32pm Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a grass fire at 3000 N Hayden Island Dr. Engine 17 (Hayden Island) found roughly 400 feet of ground level fire along a fence line and called for additional resources to help stop the fire spread and extinguish the flames. There were no hydrants close by so engine companies set up a shuttle operation. This involved moving large amounts of water to the fire utilizing water tanks on board fire engines. Fire crews used specialized wildland firefighting equipment, including lightweight fire hose, to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters from Station 22 (St. Johns) and Station 16 (Sylvan) responded in brush units which often allow for easier access to brush fires and quick deployment of wildland fire hose. In addition to their normal firefighting duties, select firefighters staff brush units for these types of incidents. Station 10 (Burlingame) is home to Water Tender 10 which is also used in wildland fires and contains more water than a normal fire engine.

The fire was brought under control at 12:11am and fire crews remained on scene to extinguish hot spots. There were no injuries reported at this fire and the cause is unknown at this time. More information will be given as it becomes available.
