NEWS RELEASE 9/30/13: PF&R Arson Investigation Unit Announces Conviction of Portland Arsonist
The PF&R Arson Investigation Unit is pleased to announce they have a conviction in the February 24, 2013 arson case in which a man is seen on a surveillance video lighting an SUV next to a home on fire. According to Arson Investigators, DNA evidence collected at the scene led them to Michael David Gunst who agreed to a plea deal with the Multnomah County District Attorney's office for a prison term of 30 months. The Arson Investigation Unit also used their canine team member (Lila) to identify the presence of fuel that was used to start the fire. Fuel was also found on three nearby residences. It's believed that Mr. Gunst intention was to start all 3 residences on fire. At the 1:14 mark of the video you can see Mr. Gunst walk through a yard to the front of a home, strike a lighter several times before an SUV burst into flames. Mr Gunst was convicted of one count of "Arson 1" and one count of "Attempted Arson 1" and will serve 30 months in a state prison.
