Portland Fire & Rescue and the Bureau of Emergency Communications would like to notify residents living in the city of Portland that there has been a surge of 911 calls related to downed power lines. In the 24-hour period from 12pm yesterday to 12pm today PF&R crews have been sent to 366 calls involving downed power lines (2/14-15). The normal average for calls like this is less than 3 in a 24 hour period.
With the demand for public safety services high, it is important that our crews are available to respond to immediate life and safety hazards. With this in mind, we are recommending that residents only call 911 for downed power lines when they are arcing, sparking, on fire or have caused an immediate danger to any person or their pets. If you see a downed power line, report it to PGE immediately at 503-464-7777 or 800-544-1795 and stay far away — especially in wet conditions.
We appreciate your cooperation and hope everyone is having a fun and safe time at home!
