Roundtable at Grant High School

February 16, 2012

Story by Sophia Kecskes

Tuesday morning, Nick and I visited an amazing group of students at Grant High School. Students in a news magazine production class, these youth got the chance to engage in a dialogue with Nick and talk about the things that really matter in their lives. Topics discussed include the impact that the media has on politics, Occupy Portland, homelessness, and the Grant Field Project.

This visit was organized as part of the Multnomah Youth Commission's partnership with Nick's office through the elected liaison program.

This Spring, three more school visits are tentatively scheduled for Franklin, Madison, and Roosevelt High Schools.

Portland Parks & Recreation welcomes Warren Jimenez as new Assistant Director

February 16, 2012

This morning, Portland Parks & Recreation Director Mike Abbate announced that Warren Jimenez will be joining the team as Assistant Director. Warren brings a record of building strong partnerships and developing strategic solutions.

"As I looked for a person who was familiar with all aspects of City government, understood the role of Portland Parks & Recreation in the community, could manage complex organizational initiatives and was respected by a diverse cross-section of community partners, Warren's name kept coming up," Director Abbate says. "I reached out to Warren and was delighted that he has agreed to join my leadership team."

We're delighted that Warren is joining our team. He'll start in his new role on April 2.

Last chance to visit a Fix-It Fair!

February 17, 2012

By David Nguyen

The season's last fix-it fair is fast approaching! The last of three fairs will be held next Saturday, February 25, at Jefferson High School on North Kirby Avenue.

Annual Fix-It Fairs, presented by the Bureau of Planning & Sustainability, are free events where you can learn simple and effective ways to save money at home and stay healthy this winter and beyond.

The fairs feature exhibits from numerous community partners, and an extensive schedule of workshops held throughout the day. Experts will be available to talk with you about water and energy savings, home and personal health, food and nutrition, community resources, recycling and yard care, lead testing, bike tune-ups and more!

The Portland Housing Bureau is proud to sponsor the event and help support homeowners in our community.

Click here for more about event's location, and scheduled workshops.

Thank you!
