Johnson Creek Days

This evening kicks off the third annual Johnson Creek Days!

September 20, 2013

This evening kicks off the third annual Johnson Creek Days!

All weekend long, come explore the beauty of Johnson Creek and learn about its restoration projects.

Tonight, join Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s Restoration Coordinator, Robin Jenkins, to experience a virtual flyover of the Johnson Creek Watershed.  Robin’s “Science Talk” starts at 6 pm at the 4th   Street Brewery. Learn about the 120 restoration projects that have been completed in the last decade, and see the newest development of the 2015-25 Restoration Action Plan.

Saturday morning, Johnson Creek Days will host a “Fun Run” in the lower watershed for runners of all capabilities. The weekend will also feature a Children’s Discovery Carnival, a “Bicycle Bonanza” bike tour of the Johnson Creek Watershed Council’s headquarters, and a “Weed Walk” tour with herbalist Randi Embree – where you discover all about the many different weeds found in the watershed and how they can be used for agricultural and medicinal purposes.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn and have fun. All the events are free, but registration is required for most.

To learn more about Johnson Creek Days or to register for an event, visit the Johnson Creek Watershed Council website.

Grant gets a special homecoming gift

This afternoon, Nick was proud to join Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Portland Public Schools (PPS), and Friends of Grant Athletics to celebrate the grand opening of the new turf athletic field and synthetic track at Grant High School!

September 20, 2013

This afternoon, Nick will proudly join Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Portland Public Schools (PPS), and Friends of Grant Athletics to celebrate the grand opening of the new turf athletic field and synthetic track at Grant High School!

The new track and field was 12 years in the making. Students at Grant have never had a turf field, and their track was in such poor condition that it was closed last year because of safety concerns.

Now student athletes will have a safe track and field to play on year round!

After the grand opening celebration, the Grant Generals will take on the Barlow Bears for the homecoming and first football game on the field.

This track was made possible through great partnerships, strong community support, and an understanding that when we invest in healthy bodies and healthy minds, we give our kids the greatest chance to fulfill their potential.

Special thanks to Detroit Lions Star and Grant High School graduate Ndamukong Suh, Nike, PPS, and Friends of Grant Athletics who have made this field a reality.

This weekend, Nick was out and about Portland at three momentous events.

Nick started his weekend Friday joining Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Nike,Portland Public Schools, and Friends of Grant Athletics at the grand opening of the new turf athletic field and synthetic track at Grant High School.

Strong partnerships and shared values brought this incredible project to life. Special thanks to Ndamukong Suh, Nike, and Friends of Grant Athletics for all the support on this project.

Saturday, Nick was honored to attend the Oregon Historical Society’s History Makers Dinner. The special event honors individuals who have made a significant impact in their field of work or service during their lifetime in Oregon. Honorees this year included Bernie and Bobbie Foster, Publishers of The Skanner.

On Sunday, Nick joined Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, City Commissioners Amanda Fritz and Steve Novick, County Commissioners Diane McKeel and Judy Shiprack, and State Representative Alissa Keny - Guyer at the 2013 Portland AIDS walk.

This year marked the 27th anniversary of the AIDS Walk. The walk is put on every year by the Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) to raise money and awareness for HIV and AIDS prevention. Visit CAP’s website to learn more about the great work that they do in the community.

Six new schools welcome The Right Brain Initiative

September 24, 2013

Earlier this month, the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) announced that The Right Brain Initiative program will enter six new schools in the Portland metro area.

In 2009, RACC launched Right Brain to transform learning for all children in the Portland tri-county area through arts, creativity, innovation, and whole brain thinking. Through a partnership with public schools, local government, charitable foundations, businesses, and the cultural community, 14,000 students in 49 schools will have an education with integrated arts programs.

This year, the Gresham-Barlow School District became the first district to involve Right Brain with every one of its elementary schools.

Congratulations to the six schools and all the students that get to participate in this visionary program!
