Tomorrow kicks off the City’s popular Fix-It Fair season!

Fix-It Fairs are free events where you can learn simple and effective ways to save money at home and stay healthy this winter and beyond. Featuring exhibits from numerous community partners, these events also include an extensive schedule of workshops held throughout the day.

Experts will be available to talk with you about water and energy savings, personal health and healthcare, food and nutrition, community resources, recycling, yard care and more!

Tomorrow’s Fix-it Fair is at Parkrose High School. The event goes from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm.

Can’t make it this weekend? More Fairs will be held in early 2014. To see the schedule and learn more about Fix-It Fairs, visit the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability’s website.

Celebrating the Foster Floodplain Natural Area

The City's Bureau of Environmental Services and Portland Parks & Recreation were proud to partner with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, the Lents neighborhood, and other local community groups to restore the Foster Floodplain Natural Area.

 November 25, 2013

In April, Nick was honored to join with the community to celebrate the completion of the Foster Floodplain Natural Area.

The City's Bureau of Environmental Services and Portland Parks & Recreation were proud to partner with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, the Lents neighborhood, and other local community groups to restore the Foster Floodplain Natural Area.

The goal was to reduce effects from regular flooding along Johnson Creek, improve the creek’s water quality, and enhance fish and wildlife habitat.

This is one of the many ways we are using cost-effective natural solutions to manage stormwater. The additional community dividend: a treasured place for East Portland families to relax, walk the trail, and watch wildlife.

We hope you will take a moment to watch the video commemorating the event, and learn more about how this project is already reducing flooding and bringing salmon back to Lents.

Shop local and support small businesses this holiday

This morning, Nick joined betsy & iya owners Will Cervarich and Betsy Cross to kick offPortland’s Little Boxes campaign.

November 26, 2013

This morning, Nick joined betsy & iya owners Will Cervarich and Betsy Cross to kick off Portland’s Little Boxes campaign and present them with a Proclamation for Small Business Saturday.

Held on November 29 and 30, Little Boxes is the biggest local Black Friday and Small Business Saturday shopping event.

Little Boxes showcases the best of Portland’s unique and collaborative small business community. For every purchase you make at one Little Box store, you qualify for a 10 percent discount at the next Little Box store.

Over 175 locally-owned, independent retailers citywide are participating in Little Boxes. This year, to help find the gifts you are looking for, Little Boxes launched a free iPhone app.

Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy. They strengthen our neighborhoods, create jobs, and are the engine of economic growth in our community. As City Council liaison to Venture Portland, Nick is proud to lend his support to Little Boxes and small businesses across Portland.

Visit their website or Facebook page to learn more about the Little Boxes campaign.
