The Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT) is looking for volunteers for their Renters’ Rights Hotline.

CAT’s mission is to educate and empower tenants to demand affordable, stable and safe rental homes. Their hotline helps those who are experiencing difficulties with the Oregon renters market. Issues range from rising rents to unfair treatment. The hotline is designed to educate and empower renters to solve their renting problems.

Hotline volunteers will receive formal training starting in February.

If you are looking for a way to be involved in your community, want to be an advocate for renter’s rights, or are just looking for a great opportunity to help, please sign up to be a hotline volunteer!

Self Enhancement Inc. is hosting the Bureau of Planning & Sustainability’s (BPS) next Fix-It Fair tomorrow!

Fix-It Fairs are free events that are held every winter to learn simple, affordable ways to save money and stay healthy at home. The event has ongoing exhibits and hourly workshops with tips on water and energy savings, gardening and growing your own food, how to keep you home safe and healthy, and many more.

The event is family-friendly and offers a number of services which includes fee lead blood testing, hourly door prizes, and a free lunch.

The fair is a great way to learn new skills, stay connected in your community and above all have a good time.

Interested in film? Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is looking for youth ages 11-17 to be part of their documentary film class!

The class starts tomorrow at Peninsula Park Community Center. Explore color, texture & composition while applying you own creations to a moving image. The class provides students with experiences using digital media to tell stories, share and explore their world.

The film that they make together will be shown at the park’s Centennial celebration on June 27.

The class is eight weeks long and runs from 12 – 2 pm. The cost is $50; however PP&R offers scholarships and will not turn anyone away for not being able to pay.

On Thursday, Nick had the honor to once again participate in the “Teacher for a Day” program.

This year, Nick enjoyed teaching with 5^th grade teacher Julie Daniels at Lent School in Southeast Portland.

One of the day’s lesson plans included vocabulary words for the week.The word that stood out for Nick was “inspired.”

Inspired is exactly how Nick felt about his experience as a teacher.

He was inspired by a dedicated teacher who puts all of her students first every day, and by the young people who welcomed him into the classroom and demonstrated their passion for learning.

Special thanks to the Lent School community, Julie Daniels, and her students for a wonderful and inspiring experience, and to the Portland Association of Teachers for organizing the event.
