Celebrating Older Americans Month

This afternoon, Nick was pleased to read a proclamation in honor of Older Americans Month.

May 1, 2013

This afternoon, Nick was pleased to join his colleagues as the Mayor read a proclamation in honor of Older Americans Month.

Since 1963, May has been officially recognized as Older Americans Month. The month honors and celebrates older adults and their contributions to our communities. This year’s theme for Older Americans Month is Unleash the Power of Age.

We were honored to host County Commissioners Loretta Smith and Judy Shiprack and Lee Girard from Multnomah County’s Aging and Disability Services.

Planting trees to celebrate diversity

Last week, students from David Douglas High School planted a tree grove to celebrate the 60 different nations represented in their East Portland school!

May 2, 2013

Last week, students from David Douglas High School planted a tree grove to celebrate the 60 different nations represented in their East Portland school!

The tree planting allowed students to be part of a hands-on stewardship program that expandsPortland’s green infrastructure. The new trees will increase the city’s urban habitat, manage stormwater, shade classrooms and improve the schools grounds.

50 Students from science, leadership and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes participated in the planting. The David Douglas ESL students won this year’s Bill Naito Community Tree Award for their work with the non-profit Friends of Trees.

The tree grove will have both international trees and trees that are native to thePacific Northwest. The planting is part of a variety of events the school is hosting leading up to Portland’s World Environment Day on June 5.

Thank you to David Douglas staff and teachers, along with all the many partners who made the grove a reality.

A New Track and Field for Grant High School

This afternoon, Nick was proud to join Detroit Lions football star Ndamukong Suh, Nike,PortlandPublic Schools, and the Friends of Grant Athletics to announce thatGrantHigh Schoolis getting a new turf athletic field and a new synthetic track!

May 2, 2013

This afternoon, Nick was proud to join Detroit Lions football star Ndamukong Suh, Nike, Portland Public Schools, and the Friends of Grant Athletics to announce that Grant High School is getting a new turf athletic field and a new synthetic track!

“We would not be breaking ground on this new field and track without the many years of hard work by the Grant Community” Nick said about the project.

Students at Grant have never had a turf athletic playing surface, and their track was in such poor condition that it was closed last year due to safety concerns. The project for a new field for Grant has been underway for more than 12 years. Because of our wonderful partners, this project is now a reality.

Ndamukong graduated from Grant in 2005. The NFL star’s Ndamukong Suh Family Foundation donation was the final piece needed close the loop and get this project started.

Grant High hopes to have the field and track completed before the start of the 2013 high school football season.

Thank you to Ndamukong, Nike, PPS, and Friends of Grant Athletics! You all have made it possible for the Grant Generals to play on one of the best sports facilities in the city.
