Council adopts new rules for all-user restrooms in Portland

Today, City Council adopted new rules for All-User Restrooms in the City of Portland.

June 1, 2016

Today, City Council adopted new rules for All-User Restrooms in the City of Portland.

In December, Council passed Nick’s Resolution requiring that all City single-user restrooms are accessible to everyone – older adults with caregivers, parents with young children, and transgender individuals.

The resolution was developed with, and supported by, key community partners, including Multnomah County, Basic Rights Oregon (BRO), the Sexual & Gender Minority Youth Resource Center (SMYRC), Elders in Action, Public Hygiene Lets Us Stay Human (PHLUSH), Disability Rights Oregon, DEEP, and others.

"The city of Portland is welcoming to all," Commissioner Fish said. "Everyone benefits when arbitrary, gender-based barriers are removed."

Next steps will be to convert over 600 single-user gender-specific restrooms into all-user restrooms by the end of the summer.

Special thanks to our own, Jamie Dunphy and Aja Blair, and to Betsy Ames, Jami Waltz, and many other City Staff for the excellent job drafting the final policy language.

For more information on All-User Restrooms, check out the Bureau of Internal Business Services’ website.

June 2, 2016

The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) awarded $119,380 in Arts Equity Grants to 21 local organizations!

Of the 21 selected for grants, 11 are receiving RACC support for the first time.

The Art Equity Grant Program provides financial support to nonprofits dedicated to arts and culture programs and services for diverse communities, including communities of color, immigrants, refugees, LGBTQ communities, persons with disabilities, and other under-represented communities.

The grants are funded by the City of Portland’s Arts Education & Access Fund, along with support from Multnomah County.

Nick is proud to serve as Council liaison to RACC, as it’s committed to funding diverse and accessible arts programs that reach all people in our community.

Check out RACC’s website for more information.
