Blue Heron Weeks highlighted in Council
June 2, 2009
Commissioner Fish and the City Council recognized Blue Heron Week with an official proclamation at this morning's Council session.
Fittingly, the Oregonian yesterday published an editorial endorsing the proposed no-wake zone in the Holgate Channel, 1.5 miles of restored natural habitat along the Willamette River on the east side of Ross Island. The Channel provides habitat for a number of native plants and animals, including the Blue Heron.
Last week, Nick joined friends Mike Houck, of the Urban Greenspaces Institute, and Bob Sallinger, of the Portland Audubon Society, on KBOO. The trio joined KBOO host Barbara Bernstein to talk about Great Blue Heron Week, which kicks off today and lasts through Sunday, June 7. (Download audio here!).
Great Blue Heron Week has become a Portland tradition, and the show aimed to encourage folks to think of this time of the year as a time to engage in local habitat restoration efforts.
We encourage you to take advantage of the great trips and special events happening this week. There is truly something for everyone!
