Local seniors connect to Hollywood Farmers Market
July 12, 2010
Oregon consistently ranks in the top five in hunger nationally, and more Oregonians than ever before are struggling to find enough to eat. From providing fresh, healthy food at our community centers and expanding our Community Garden program to supporting local farmers markets and spotlighting outstanding non-profits working to end hunger in our community, Nick is working hard to help bring healthy food to the Portlanders who need it most.
Seniors are among those hardest hit by hunger, and barriers like transportation and cost can make it difficult to access healthy food options like farmers markets. This past weekend, the Hollywood Senior Center, Elders in Action, the Hands on Boomer Initiative, and AARP helped some our local seniors connect to the Hollywood Farmers Market in a variety of ways. Nick was excited be a part of the exciting and important event, where volunteers helped seniors shop, shopped for folks who weren't able to be there, and helped pack free food boxes for some of our most vulnerable seniors.
