BMX Jam this Saturday!

August 10, 2010

Portland Parks & Recreation offers exciting skate classes, events, and other activities at skateparks citywide. Coming up this Saturday, Parks will host a BMX Jam at Glenhaven Skatepark in NE Portland. The event will include food, drink, prizes, a dj, and separate 19 & under and 12 & under brackets. Glenhaven also hosted a Skate Jam in late July.

Glenhaven, at NE 82nd and Siskiyou, offers 11,000 square feet of space for skaters, including a 5,500 square foot street course. The 16-acre park also has a baseball field, a disabled access play area, paved paths, plenty of picnic tables, soccer and softball fields, and a tennis court.

Parks has been working for several years to develop a skatepark system to meet the need for safe, legal places skaters can enjoy. An advisory committee, of skaters, neighborhood folks, and other stakeholders crafted a package of recommendations for the City Council which included a regional facility, a series of district skateparks, and a number of neighborhood sites. Their ideas have shaped our current range of facilities and because of their work, every new park is considered as a possible site for a new skatepark.

So far, Parks has developed four district sites, at Pier, Glenhaven, Gabriel, and Ed Benedict Parks, as well as a site at Holly Farm Park. Stay tuned for more to come!
