Council will consider 2010 Heritage Trees

November 9, 2010

Trees add so much to our community. They provide a wide range of environmental benefits by improving our air and water quality, serving as important habitat for birds and wildlife, helping us reach our Climate Action Plan goals, and bringing beauty to our neighborhoods.

Wednesday, the Council will consider 8 trees recommended by the Urban Forestry Commission for special Heritage Tree designation. Each year since 1993 the Council has approved certain trees for this designation.

In recognition of their significance, Heritage Trees receive extra protections and can't be removed without the consent of both the Urban Forestry Commission and the City Council.

Approving these 8 trees will bring our total stock of Heritage Trees to 286, representing 122 species, each of which helps us preserve and promote our healthy and diverse urban canopy.
